I’ve always been intrigued by the concept of in-fill housing.  The creativity and planning it takes to fit a home into an irregular space is genius! There are so many factors to take into account:

  • Style – fitting into the existing style and vibe of the neighbourhood
  • Natural light – taking advantage of the available natural light for the infill home without blocking it for the adjacent homes
  • Layout – making the home feel just as spacious as its full size lot counterparts.
  • Storage – these homes are usually on the smaller scale, so making sure there is enough storage for the intended occupant.

And those are just a few!

This week we are going to check out plans for an infill home.  This home was build here in Ottawa by the award-winning architectural firm – Christopher Simmonds Architect Inc.

What I love:

  • The scale of this home is in keeping with other homes in the neighbourhood.  Many infill homes tower over their neighbours.
  • The external finishes – barnboard/weathered siding (swoon!)
  • The design takes into account the lighting challenges of infill homes
  • The wide open living spaces

What I’d change:

  • I know the expansive windows help with the openness of the house, but I would have to make sure I had sufficient window treatments to keep my privacy.

What do you think about infill housing?  Would you live in one?  Would you want one as a neighbour?
